Aufbau eines Digital Learning Space an der IU Internationale Hochschule

Abstract

Digital learning environments can be much more than just platforms for information and communication – they have the potential to evolve into a “third place” where students, educators, and external participants come together to learn from one another and collaboratively develop new ideas. The digital learning space (DLS) at IU International University of Applied Sciences aims to create exactly such a space: a platform that fosters collaborative learning formats, promotes lifelong learning, en hances media literacy, and contributes to a holistic sense of academic wellbeing. This article presents the concept of the digital learning space at IU International University, which is designed around student needs and combines elements of a library, a digital seminar room, and an in tercultural learning environment. The goal is to cultivate a vibrant community that offers both synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities – from moderated discussions, webinars, and digital project workshops to targeted tutorials and re sources for media and information literacy. This paper will address the following issues: What exactly is a DLS, and how can it support students not only academically, but also in their personal development. What role does a diversity-aware approach play – one that considers different cultural backgrounds and learning styles? And how can such an offering be implemented and sustainably integrated into daily academic life so that it is truly perceived as a third place? The article offers readers a deeper understanding of the technical, conceptual, and didactic aspects of the DLS, along with the key challenges and factors that contributed to its success. Digitale Lernumgebungen können weit mehr sein als reine Informations- und Austauschplattformen – sie haben das Potenzial, zu einem „Dritten Ort“ heranzuwachsen, an dem Studierende, Lehrende und externe In- teressierte zusammenkommen, voneinander lernen und gemeinsam neue Ideen entwickeln. Der Digital Learning Space (DLS) soll genau diesen Raum bieten: Eine Plattform, die Zugang zu kollaborativen Lernformaten schafft, lebenslanges Lernen fördert, Medienkompetenzen stärkt und so zum ganzheitlichen akademischen Wohlbefinden beiträgt. In diesem Artikel wird das Konzept des Digital Learning Space der IU Internationalen Hochschule vorgestellt, das sich an den Bedürfnissen der Studierenden orientiert und Elemente aus Bibliothek, digitalem Seminarraum sowie interkulturellem Lernort vereint. Im Mittelpunkt stehen folgende Fragen: Was ist eigentlich ein DLS und wie kann er Studierende nicht nur fachlich, sondern auch persönlich weiterbringen? Welche Rolle spielt dabei ein diversitätsbewus- ster Ansatz, welcher unterschiedliche kulturelle Hintergründe und Lernstile berücksichtigt? Wie lässt sich ein solches Angebot umsetzen und nachhaltig in den Studienalltag integrieren, um langfristig als Dritter Ort wahrgenommen zu werden? Hier werden Einblicke in die techni- schen, konzeptionellen und didaktischen Überlegungen sowie Heraus- forderungen und Erfolgsfaktoren gegeben.
